"Hideyoshi"
Birth Story

In the early Edo period, there was a man named Chohei who ran an oil shop in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture).
Raised in an environment where pilgrims from all over the country visited Ise and the latest information gathered, Chohei's son decided to migrate to fertile Akita.
That young man who entered Nagano Village (Nakasen Town) became a landowner after great hardship.
Then, taking advantage of Nagano Village's blessings of rice and water, sake brewing began in Genroku 2.
This is the birth of our brewery, which counts 330 years of history in Akita Prefecture, a sake region.

Highlights HIGHLIGHTS

Origin of the Brand Name

During the Kaei era when our brewery's sake name was "Hatsu Arashi," Akita domain lord Satake gathered fine sake from within the domain and held a sake competition. There, our sake was highly praised as superior to the previous official sake "Kiyomasa." We were granted the name "Hideyoshi," combining two meanings: "Toyotomi Hideyoshi," whom Kato Kiyomasa served, and "excellent." This continues to this day. Locally, we have received unwavering trust and patronage since our founding in Genroku.

Historic Brewery

The house and brewery rebuilt in the early Meiji period have the weight and dignity that only things that have passed through long years possess. Inside the brewery, a huge "Japanese kettle" for steaming rice and a fully lacquered "sake tank" (sakabune) for pressing sake are enshrined. All tools are so well-loved that it's hard to believe they are still in active use.

Artworks Housed in the Brewery

A library warehouse housing Suzuki family collections passed down through 14 generations is attached to the brewery. We own many sake brewing biographies and ancient artworks, including donations from Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga. You can feel the depth of the brewery's history through these artworks.

  • Hairpin (Kanzashi)

This has been carefully passed down as a tool for welcoming brides into the Suzuki family. It is made with goldwork, and the decorations use crystal and coral.

  • Ancient Documents

"Sake Brewing Biography Records Since the Genroku Era" begins with this passage. "Feel the changing seasons with your skin and senses, and begin brewing sake when the time is ripe"—this passage expresses the essence of sake brewing and teaches us that the workings of nature are the way of all things.

Sake Tasting at the Brewery Tour

At the brewery tour, you can taste snacks that pair with sake, as well as seasonal sake of that period. You can enjoy the scenery of a brewery that has continued for over 330 years.
